When Does An Ace Count As 11 In Blackjack

Any blackjack hand that contains an ace counted as an 11 is a soft hand. So it does not matter when the ace entered the hand. Blackjack is played with 1 to 9 decks of 52 cards each. The values of the cards correspond to their numerical value from 2-10. All face cards (Jack, Queen, King) count 10 and the Ace either 1 or 11, as the holders desires. A score with an ace valued as 11 is named soft-hand. An ace can only count as eleven, but two aces count as a blackjack. It is mostly played in private circles and barracks. The popular British member of the Vingt-Un family is called Pontoon, the name being probably a corruption of 'Vingt-et-un'.

(I figure PUZZLE people play cards, so ...)
WhenOK, we are learning blackjack; The ACE can count as either a one-point or an eleven-point.
I read conflicting notes after a web search, and it seems to me that the player can flip-flop throughout the hand, switching from, say 1 to 11 back to 1 back to 11 at will.RulesWhen
I also read that 'stand' and 'hit' must be hand signals at real casinos so the cameras can 'see' what the player is 'saying'.
OK.
IF you play Blackjack on a regular basis, how often can you switch between 1/11 for an ace, and how do you communiocate this to the dealer?
We are only playing at home, so there is no criminal risk here; we are just curious novices who have been playing (just the two of us) for almost 48 hours (off and on!), and haven't been able to get a satisfactory answer to this question.

Ace-to-Five Count is the simplest card counting method available as you'll only have to track aces and fives. Needless to say it's also the least profitable when perfectly executed, although also the easiest to execute perfectly. (Credit for the A-to-5 Count goes to Michael Shackleford.)

Here's the A-5 card counting strategy:

  • Start the count from zero.
  • For every five dealt, add 1 to the count.
  • For every ace dealt, subtract 1 from the count.
  • When the count hits +2 or more, bet the maximum.
  • When the count is anything else but +2 or more, bet the minimum.

What is the idea of only tracking fives and aces? Well, obviously the amount of aces is going to dictate the amount of blackjacks you and the dealer are going to make. And once it's more likely for a blackjack to come, the player benefits because blackjack pays 3:2 (read why you should never play 6:5 blackjack games). On the other hand, fives are good for the dealer because they help to make dealer's otherwise weak hands strong.

It has been argued whether it's worth it at all to use Ace-to-Five Count as you'll only lower the house edge to a break-even point. In my opinion, most blackjack players should be happy to not lose any money. In fact, suggesting you play a considerable amount of blackjack on monthly basis, you'll get free hotel nights, meals and other comps and therefore end-up a winner by playing according to Ace-to-Five count.

That being said, I recommend either the Hi-Lo Count or the Knockout Count for beginners in case you're even a bit interested making profit from counting cards at blackjack.
