While federal legislation could pre-empt this move eventually, federal bills have been languishing for over a year with no deadline for consideration, let alone passage, in sight.

In 1931, Nevada became the first U.S. state to legalize gambling, and for more than four decades it was the only state in America with legal casinos and sports betting. Practically every form of gambling is allowed in the Silver State, provided operators are properly licensed and abide by the regulations enforced by the Nevada Gaming Control Commission.

While Delaware was the first state to legalize online gambling, Nevada shortly followed suit in early 2013. However, unlike other states, Nevada only allows online poker and forbids other casino games from being played online. That said, Nevada may well allow other types of online gambling in the near future.

Nevada was the first U.S. state to offer legalized online poker when Ultimate Poker went online in April 2013. However, after struggling for a year-and-a-half, the site closed in late 2014.

Best Online Poker Sites for Nevada Players

Currently, there are two online poker sites in operation in Nevada, although in actuality there really is only one option.

One of them, Real Gaming Online Poker, is operated by the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa. Since launching in early 2014, Real Gaming Online Poker has seen very little traffic — so little it generally cannot support running multi-table tournaments. Indeed, it is a bit of a ghost site, often with no players at all logged on.

The other, primary option for Nevada online poker players is WSOP.com, operated by Caesars Interactive Entertainment and using the 888poker platform. Often a few hundred players are online at any given time of day or night playing cash games, sit-n-go's, and daily multi-table tournaments.

The most popular cash games are low stakes six-handed and full ring no-limit hold’em, with some pot-limit Omaha tables occasionally running. Limit hold’em, Omaha hi-lo, pot-limit Omaha hi-lo, seven-card stud, and seven-card stud hi-lo tables are available but only pop up from time to time.

WSOP.com offers sign-up bonuses and has a player reward system. The desktop client works well while the mobile version has limited functionality. During its first couple of years of operation, players frequently criticized the lack of availability of site support, though more recently those complaints have lessened.

Nevada signed a compact with Delaware to share player pools and began doing so in March 2015. Later Nevada did the same with New Jersey, and WSOP.com began combining player pools from all three states starting April 30, 2018.

In Nevada, traffic especially picks up at WSOP.com in June and July during the World Series of Poker. On the site, players can play satellites to bracelet events, including the WSOP Main Event, and since 2015 there have been online bracelet events as well.
